We’re always happy to provide support for our customers, and if you have a drain problem and you need assistance, we’re happy to help. Though, if you’d prefer to give it a go yourself here’s a safe, drain-friendly way to unclog your kitchen sink or another blocked drain. It only takes a few minutes of your time, it’s extremely effective, almost free, and doesn’t require a callout from us or a plumber.

When it comes to unclogging your kitchen sink, the first reaction is often to go to the shop and buy chemical drain cleaners. However, these can cause drain damage. And you probably have the ingredients at home to do an effective cleaning of your pipework without risking damage to the drains. It’s simply baking soda and vinegar.Unclog Your Kitchen Sink

A plunger can also partially unclog your drain, this is a good interim solution. However, more than likely the pipe lining will be coated with grime, fat and oils. This needs to be cleared properly if you’re to ensure your drains are clear for the foreseeable future.

Unclog a kitchen sink using baking soda and vinegar

Before beginning, boil a litre of hot water and pour it down the drain. Don’t worry, it’s not going to waste — it’s going to do a very important job of preparing the solids stuck in your drain before the next step.

Next, get a cup of baking soda and pour this too down the drain.  You can use a little more hot water to ensure it all goes into the S-bend. Leave the soda sit there for 5-1o minutes.. Then add a cup of white vinegar and pour this down the drain. A chemical reaction will occur between the baking soda and vinegar which will create a big chemical reaction. It’ll expand and foam inside the pipework. You may see some fizz rise in your sink. Leave this reaction continue for an additional 5-10 minutes.

Boil another litre of boiling water and once again pour it down the drain to help wash away the dissolved debris.

Lastly, run the hot tap for an additional 5 minutes to help flush away all the remaining fat oil and grease that may remain.  This should also clear away any foul drain smells.

If you still have a blockage in your sink, it’s likely something else is the culprit. It’s probably best to give us a call and we can discuss the matter and help you identify the issue. You can call us any time on 1800 437 246
